Vaginal Dryness Treatment Halifax

What is vaginal dryness?

Vaginal dryness occurs when the delicate vaginal tissues lose their natural lubrication. This lubrication is essential for health and comfort, as it protects the tissues during sexual activity and even as we move around during our normal activities.

When natural lubrication is insufficient, the vaginal tissues become more fragile, less elastic, and prone to damage and irritation.

What does a dry vagina feel like?

Women experience vaginal dryness differently, but the following symptoms are common:

Other symptoms of vaginal dryness may include an unusual discharge, and this should always be checked by a healthcare professional.

Causes of vaginal dryness

Many women experience vaginal dryness as a result of hormone changes, and these can be due to the following;

Menopause

Over half of postmenopausal women experience vaginal dryness due to a reduction in the body’s production of estrogen. This causes thinning of the vaginal walls, loss of collagen, and reduced vaginal lubrication and elasticity. Estrogen helps cells fight harmful bacteria, so many postmenopausal women find that they suffer from recurrent UTIs.

If you have postmenopausal vaginal dryness, you may also hear it referred to as atrophic vaginitis or vaginal atrophy.

Cancer treatments

Anti-estrogen medications are often used to treat cancer, and many women of any age suffer from vaginal dryness during their treatment.

Surgery

Surgical removal of the uterus or ovaries can affect vaginal health and cause vaginal dryness for the first time.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause all sorts of changes in the body, including vaginal dryness. Resuming birth control after pregnancy can also affect the vagina.

Other underlying conditions

Some autoimmune diseases, including Sjogren’s, can affect the membranes throughout the body, causing dryness.

Our Halifax patients typically report an improvement in their symptoms after three months of HRT.

This advanced injectable treatment uses polynucleotides to repair damage to the vaginal walls. Polynucleotides are tiny fragments of highly purified DNA that boost cell renewal and have a rejuvenating effect on vaginal tissues, strengthening them, repairing damage, and providing high levels of soothing hydration.

NewGyn Polynucleotide treatment is minimally invasive and requires little downtime. Many of our Halifax patients report significant improvements after just a few sessions.

EmPower RF Treatment

This highly effective yet gentle treatment uses radiofrequency waves to improve the health of the vaginal tissues. EmPower RF Treatment creates powerful muscle contractions that restore strength to the pelvic floor muscles and stimulate collagen production, restoring elasticity, resilience, and firmness to the vaginal walls.

Treatments for mild vaginal dryness

We often advise Halifax patients suffering from mild symptoms of vaginal atrophy and dryness to try the following treatments.

Local estrogen treatments

Vaginal estrogen is the gold standard treatment for vaginal dryness, and many women find this a very effective solution. Low-dose topical vaginal estrogen treatments are prescribed by a health professional.

Water-based lubricants

Water-based vaginal lubricants are readily available from your local pharmacy and can provide immediate but temporary relief, making sexual relations more comfortable.

Vaginal moisturisers

Regular application of vaginal moisturizers every two to three days can restore moisture to the delicate tissues of the vagina, helping protect them from damage.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy

Pelvic floor muscle exercises strengthen the muscles in the pelvic area, providing support to the vaginal walls. Exercising these muscles will also improve blood flow to the area, promoting healthy tissue.

If your symptoms persist, you may need more professional help and the more effective treatments for vaginal dryness and discomfort that we can provide.

About Halifax

Halifax is a historic market town in West Yorkshire, with a recorded history dating back to at least 1091. The town’s prosperity grew from the medieval wool and textile trade, which later made it an important centre of the Industrial Revolution. The magnificent Piece Hall, opened in 1779, was built for the trade in handwoven woolen cloth and is now one of Britain’s finest Georgian buildings.

Other notable landmarks include Halifax Minster, parts of which date from the 12th century, and Shibden Hall, a medieval manor associated with diarist Anne Lister, whose life was made into the popular TV series Gentleman Jack.
