What is the cause of skin cancer?

Skin cancer is often caused by overexposure to UV rays. This can be due to over exposure to the sun without sun protection or by the use of tanning beds.

Where does skin cancer develop?

Cancerous cells can develop in the skin anywhere on the body but skin cancer is often found in exposed areas like the face and neck.

Is skin cancer serious?

Like all cancers, skin cancer can often be treated successfully if found early. If you have any changes in your skin you should consult your doctor.

Types of skin cancer

Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma BCC is the most common type of skin cancer and most grow slowly.

These lesions are often caused by sun exposure and are commonly found on the face, neck and scalp. A basal cell carcinoma BCC usually spreads locally into surrounding healthy tissue.

If detected at an early stage this type of skin cancer can usually be removed successfully with surgical excision.

Squamous cell carcinoma scc

Squamous cell carcinoma SCC grows more quickly and may spread elsewhere in the body if not treated early enough.

Malignant melanoma

Malignant melanoma is the most aggressive type of skin cancer that requires early diagnosis and extensive treatment.

All skin cancers should be diagnosed and treated as early as possible to ensure the best outcome.

When should I be concerned about skin changes?

Skin cancer can look different in different people, and even doctors often need to examine a sample from a surgical biopsy before they can make an accurate diagnosis.

You should see a consultant dermatologist if you notice any of the following:

Skin cancer treatment at MySkyn

The range of skin cancer treatment services provided for our Leeds patients is as follows:

Surgical Excisional biopsy

Your surgeon will use a scalpel to remove the lesion and a margin of healthy tissue for testing. This procedure is carried out with a local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area.

Cryotherapy

For low-risk lesions, your surgeon will use liquid nitrogen to kill the cancerous cells.

Curettage & Electrodessication

Your surgeon will use an electric needle to scrape away cancerous cells from a basal or squamous cell carcinoma.

The creation of a skin graft or flap

If the surgical removal of your skin cancer has left a wound, a skin flap or graft can be created to cover the area and reduce scarring.

Histology

Sample cells removed during a biopsy will be analysed in a pathology laboratory to confirm the diagnosis. This information will be used to design a further treatment plan if necessary.
