What is urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is an inability to stop the bladder from emptying involuntarily due to weakness in the pelvic muscles or problems with the bladder.
Many women leak drops of urine when they exercise, while others experience urine loss constantly.
However, incontinence affects you; we know that it is a distressing and debilitating condition that has a significant effect on self-esteem. It can make women reluctant to leave their homes, to exercise or to have intimate relations.
Common causes of poor bladder control
Ageing
As we age, all our muscles weaken, including those in the pelvic floor. The pelvic floor muscles support the bladder, and when this support is removed, control of bladder function is diminished.
Menopause
The change in hormone levels during menopause also affects the muscle fibres of the pelvic floor, making them less elastic. These changes also lead to reduced bladder control.
Pregnancy and childbirth
The weight of a growing baby and the tissue trauma that occurs during childbirth can place great strain on the entire pelvic floor.
Once the pelvic floor muscles have been overstretched, it can be difficult for them to snap back into place.
Many mothers experience reduced bladder control after their first baby, and the situation tends to worsen with each pregnancy and labour.
Obesity
Excess weight in the torso puts pressure on the bladder, which causes it to leak urine.
Types of urinary incontinence
Poor bladder control is experienced in different ways.
The most common types of urinary incontinence are as follows:
Stress incontinence
If you tend to leak urine when you put pressure on the bladder and the pelvic floor muscles by coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising, then you are suffering from stress incontinence.
Overflow incontinence
Sometimes the weakened muscle fibres don’t keep the bladder sphincter fully closed, allowing constant leakage of urine.
Urge incontinence
This is also known as an overactive bladder and is characterised by an urgent desire to empty the bladder.
Unless you happen to be in the bathroom when this urge occurs, you may experience a significant leakage, often soiling your clothes.
Mixed Incontinence
In reality, many women suffer from both stress and urge incontinence, and we call this mixed incontinence.
Treatment options to try for yourself at home
We recommend that our Leeds clients try some at-home exercises to improve bladder control.
Strengthen your Pelvic Floor Muscles
All women of every age should do pelvic floor exercises regularly. Kegel exercises can be done at any time, and after a few weeks, you will notice the benefits.
Bladder retraining
If you are concerned about leakage, you may be making this situation worse by emptying your bladder frequently, just in case.
To retrain your bladder muscle, resist the urge to go to the toilet when you don’t need to. As your bladder fills, wait as long as you can before emptying it and then increase the amount of time between toilet visits.
Don’t irritate your bladder
Certain foods and drinks are known to irritate the bladder, including alcohol, caffeine, tea and spicy food.
Try avoiding excessive consumption of all of these and see if it helps with bladder urgency.
Lose weight
Easier said than done, we know, but losing weight will reduce pressure on your bladder and pelvic floor muscles, which may in turn reduce both stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
If you try to do all of the above, you may find that your urinary incontinence improves significantly and doesn’t require further treatment.
Medical incontinence treatment options
There are some first-line treatment options for urinary incontinence that a healthcare professional can prescribe.
Medicines
Some medications can help with an overactive bladder. Taking them as prescribed will help you manage this issue.
Support Devices
Pessaries are made of soft silicone. When they are inserted into the vagina, they place pressure on the urethra, preventing leakage from the bladder.
Pessaries can be an effective way to manage slight urine leaks when you cough or sneeze.

How does Empower RF work?
This highly effective treatment targets lax pelvic floor muscles in four ways:
Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)
The muscles are stimulated to contract and relax at much greater intensity than you could achieve with Kegel exercises, increasing their strength and firmness.
Intravaginal EMS
The muscles of the vaginal wall are deep within the pelvis and also play a part in supporting the internal organs.
This treatment rejuvenates the vaginal muscles and improves sexual function as well as the symptoms of urinary incontinence.
Radiofrequency Energy and Sub-dermal Fractional Microneedling
These two treatments promote collagen production in the intimate areas, improving tissue elasticity and firmness.
