What is upper eyelid blepharoplasty?
Upper eyelid surgery– also known as blepharoplasty– is a surgical treatment offered at MySkyn Clinic in Bradford. It is primarily used to treat fat bulges or loose skin on the upper eyelid.
The surgery is designed to increase volume in the eyelid, remove or reposition excess fat and improve skin laxity.
Here at MySkyn, the blepharoplasty procedure is performed by specialist Mr. Sharif Al-Ghazal.

Why have upper eyelid surgery?
Everybody’s reason is different. It may be that you have difficulty applying eye make-up, or your peripheral vision is restricted by the shape of your eyelid.
Age often causes the cushion of fat around our eye balls to bulge, stretching the skin of the upper eyelid, causing blepharoptosis– eyelid hooding.
You may want to consider blepharoplasty for the upper eyelids if you have:
- Crepey skin/folds of loose skin on the eyelid
- Bulges of fat on the eyelid
- Hooded eyelids
How does Blepharoplasty work?
Consultation
We lead all our clients through a thorough consultation in order to understand what they are hoping to achieve from blepharoplasty. It could be that a different aesthetic treatment is more suitable for their desired results or medical history. Often, it will be the formation of the brow that causes the hooded appearance of the upper eyes and it is this that needs correcting.
Everybody is unique and we like to offer our clients the opportunity to explore their options before they commit. The consultation is also a chance for them to get to know us and raise any concerns they may have prior to surgery.

Procedure
The procedure can be carried out within an hour. When you arrive, you will be dressed in a gown and will be asked to confirm your consent. One of our qualified nurses will escort you to the surgical suite to meet our consultant plastic surgeon, Mr. Sharif Al-Ghazal.
During the procedure, a small piece of skin and muscle is removed from the upper eyelid crease, allowing access to fat beneath. The fat can be repositioned or decreased in size. The skin is finely stitched back together. A faint scar will be left, hidden by the natural crease of the eyelid, and this will fade with time.
The treatment can be performed under local anaesthetic. The skin is pre-numbed with a gel so that you feel no pain. At the end of the procedure, an antibiotic cream will be applied to the suture site.
It is very rare for infection to occur, though no operation is without risk. We take care to minimise risks through careful patient selection. Following our guidance and post operative advice is also essential for a speedy recovery.
Recovery and Aftercare
There is no need to remain at the clinic for observation. You can go straight home following the procedure, but we do recommend taking one week off work for the first phase of recovery.
Bruising or swelling on the eyelid is common after surgery and can last about one week. This can be soothed with cold packs and by elevating the head. Your eyes may also feel gritty, which can be combated with lubricating eyedrops. We advise that you avoid direct sunlight and strenuous exercise for the first few days.
Stitches can be removed after 7 days. At this stage you can begin to wear make-up again, return to work and resume physical activity. Contact lenses should be avoided for 2 weeks after the operation, and the surgery will be fully healed after 12 weeks.
We will be on hand at any time to help you during your recovery and to answer any questions you may have. It is important to us here at MySkyn that you feel supported and confident during every stage of your journey with us.
Blepharoplasty surgery is permanent, but age will continue to have an effect on the shape of the eyes. It may be that you will need further surgery later on in life.

Bradford is located within the eastern foothills of the Pennines, central to the UK. The city is the second largest in West Yorkshire, its growth stemming from the 19th Century industrial revolution, during which time it was an international centre of textile manufacture. Because of this, it was dubbed ‘Wool Capital of the World’.
The city’s name derives from Old English for ‘the broad ford’, due to its location at a major Saxon crossing of the Bradford Beck. The site of the original ford is now found on Church Bank, below Bradford Cathedral.
MySkyn Clinc is based at: Allerton Health Centre, Belldean Road, Bradford, BD15 7WA. We have free parking and are located within easy access of all major routes into Bradford.
