What Causes Skin Pigmentation?
Melanin is the pigment in the body that affects your skin, hair and eye colour. The more melanin you have in your skin, the darker your skin tone.
Pigmentation as a skin condition occurs when there is an imbalance of melanin in the skin.
The production of excess melanin due to skin cell damage can lead to hyper-pigmentation and dark patches on the skin. When melanin production is reduced, this can lead to hypo-pigmentation, where the skin turns lighter.
Common signs of skin pigmentation are the appearance of melasma, freckles, sunspots and Post Inflammatory Hyper-pigmentation (PIH). Acne, sun damage and dermatitis can all cause PIH.
