Sun Protection Factor – A must-do skincare step for everyone

If you have ever been on holiday to a sun-drenched destination, then you will almost certainly be aware of how vital SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is when choosing a cream to protect your skin. But did you know there are two separate factors at play that you need to consider when choosing the best protection for your skin type?

Different Rays, Different Risks

So here comes the science bit, the Sun emits ultraviolet radiation which travels as light to our planet. This light arrives in two distinctive forms UVA & UVB the difference between the two is the length of the light waves.

UV Radiation and the Skin, Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen

The latest research now suggests that both UVA & UVB carry risks to our health and the vibrancy of our skin. Overexposing ourselves to these rays can result in premature ageing of the skin, eye damage and even skin cancer. Their impact can also suppress our immune system making it difficult to fight a whole range of different ailments.

But did you know that UVA is all around us during the day whether we are indoors or outdoors and even on a cloudy day? This is because UVA can penetrate clouds, glass and is present for most of the time during daylight hours.

Well, it turns out that UVA is responsible for premature ageing because It reaches the deeper layers affecting the elastin in our skin. This can lead to wrinkles, and sun-induced skin ageing with these effects become even more pronounced as we get older. Additionally UVB rays are responsible for reddening and tanning our skin, but they can also trigger pigmentation, e.g. freckles and existing conditions like melasma.

So how can you protect yourself? We recommend wearing an SPF daily product of factor 30 and above to help diminish the chances of skin damage from these harmful and invisible rays. We recommend that everyone incorporates an SPF into their daily skin-care routine, even when it’s the height of winter!

SPF products recommended by MySkyn Clinic

Our favourite SPF skin care product at the moment is La Roche-Posay. We love it because of its light, non-greasy or chalky feel. You can use it as a primer for the skin and is also a good base for your makeup.

Reform Skincare Vitamin C 20% Serum

Additionally, we can boost our protection against UV damage by combining SPF and Vitamin C. They can work together as a super defence for our skin. We love the Reform 20% Vitamin C because it is easily absorbed into the skin and has a light texture. It is fragrance-free and easy to apply.

To better understand the benefits of Vitamin C have a look at the picture of this apple. Vit C has been applied to this cut apple on the right. It has stopped it from browning, drying and shrivelling up. It could do the same for your skin!
