Acne is a common skin condition among adolescents, but can occur at any period of a person’s life. It is a condition with no known cure, but there are effective methods to control the symptoms.
Symptoms of acne include a concentrated outbreak of spots and skin that is very oily, hot or painful to touch. There are six identified types of acne spot, some of which cause permanent scarring. Cysts are the most severe and liable to cause the greatest damage to the skin.
The most usual place for acne to occur is on the face, but people also get it on their back and chest.
A usually harmless bacterium on the skin – P. acnes – is widely considered the cause of acne. Its activity can be changed by the production of excess oil in glands next to hair follicles, prompted by hormonal fluctuations in the body. This oil makes the bacteria more aggressive. Pus and inflammation occurs and pores become blocked, worsening the condition.

Micro-needling – a handheld device uses tiny needles to puncture the skin’s surface, stimulating collagen production within the dermis. The body’s natural healing processes will begin to restore your skin to health, smoothing irregularities and decreasing acne scarring.
Chemical peels – skin peels will exfoliate the top layer of skin, peeling away dead or impure skin cells. The cells that grow back will be young and healthy, smoothing the appearance of scarring and reducing the chance of acne reoccurring.
Laser resurfacing – this technique both exfoliates the skin and promotes collagen production, penetrating deep into the dermal tissue for long-lasting results. Laser resurfacing creates healthy tissue, eradicating the signs of scarring.
Sub-cision – Spots can be lanced in a way that will avoid scarring and scars can be released with a needle.
Dermal fillers – dermal fillers can essentially ‘fill in’ scars by re-volumising the hollow indentations that spots leave behind. The fillers can be localised to targeted areas, making them very effective for treating specific scars.
Steroid injections – these are good for treating hypertrophic or keloid scarring, for which dermal fillers are not as effective.
